Crete is littered with unfinished buildings. Because the economy isn’t strong, these things are often paid for and thus built in stages. The shells of buildings can sit for years while money is gathered to pay for the next stage.
I was there for a week this summer and on the way to the hotel from the airport, I saw dozens of these shells. Hoping that I would get a chance to get a closer look at some of them, I was happy to find that the building next door to our hotel was in fact another hotel. But unlike ours (thankfully), this one was unfinished. I went round first thing in the morning to get a look.
I’ve no idea how long it had been sitting or if there was even a chance that it would be finished as it was clearly being reclaimed by nature. It would certainly be interesting to revisit if it were ever to be completed.
